Easy travel for me this year! Just up the road! But I still haven’t packed and I need to go and do it right now. If any of you are planning on coming to the big Literacy Book Signing on Weds 30th in the Marriott, it’s at 5:30-7:30 pm
I’m hoping to see some friendly faces at the literacy signing: here’s a list of the authors that are going:

A gently used post from Lust Bites

Once upon a time, Kate was bored and fed up writing about baggage-laden bisexual Regency Rakes. She wondered what to write. What was the stupidest idea her over-active imagination had come up with recently? Ah, yes-futuristic intergalactic vikings who loved women, loved them so much they were prepared to do almost anything to keep their females happy-even share them with other men to make sure they were primed and ready and keen to make babies.
Kate was keen on this idea because she realized she could make the whole world up and no one would be able to tell her that grandfather clocks didn’t exist in 1815 or that debutantes weren’t called that in the Regency period. If she wanted 2 suns and purple sand and unbelievably sexy men, she could simply make it so, just like Captain Jean Luc Picard.
Cue gratuitous picture of Captain Picard who isn’t a viking at all but is very definitely a space traveler like Douglass Fraser in PLANET MAIL, the first book of the series who crash lands her United Parcel Planetary space ship on Planet Valhalla and sets up a whole series of books in which wise cracking cynical Earth women get to take advantage of gorgeous hunky sex mad vikings. A match made in heaven, or in the heavens maybe.

Of course, these wouldn’t be those unpleasant vikings we learned about at school. These were more fashioned on the Hollywood version as embodied by Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis-a film which made a very powerful impression on my young mind. I’m not sure why, because when I saw again it as an adult I laughed myself silly, but I had a degree in history by then and thought I was so educated

Anyway so that’s how I got my crazy idea about writing about intergalactic vikings who love sex- the’Star Trek meet Tony Curtis’ chronicles. Strangely enough, for such a light-hearted enterprise, the first book, PLANET MAIL, did really well, helped by a fabulous cover.

And here, with no further introduction, is a small excerpt from SECURED MAIL which comes out on July 30th from Ellora’s Cave in e-book form, and maybe, much later as a print book. Sven, our hero, is finding out that on Valhalla, the female, aka Earth woman Thea Cooper rules…
Thea persuaded the restaurant to give them a discreet table at the back of the room. Despite her caution, since they’d sat down, every single server in the place had managed to pass their table. It was Sven’s fault. Dressed in black leather he was the finest eye candy she had ever seen. To his credit, he made no effort to acknowledge the constant stream of servers who offered him water, cocktails and dinner menus, his attention remained on her. After considerable thought, Thea ordered two large pizzas, a salad and a side of garlic bread. She hoped that would be enough to satisfy her dinner companion who sat quietly sipping his beer. His long legs stretched so far out under the table, his booted foot nudged hers. She propped her elbows on the red and white checked table top and smiled brightly at him. “So tell me, where were you born?†“On Valhalla.†She kept smiling. “Where exactly?†“Why do you wish to know?†Her smile slipped a little. “Because I’m making conversation. That’s what we do here on Earth while we’re waiting for our food to arrive.†He put down his beer. “I was born in a small village called Iron Fist.†“And how did you meet King Marcus?†“I met him when I was selected to be one of his bodyguards.†“How old were you then?†“Old enough to fight.†Thea sent up a prayer to the heavens for patience. “Old enough to miss your family?†He looked away from her, his mouth set in a thin line. “Old enough to have seen them all die.†She closed her eyes for a moment. “I’m sorry. You’re right. That’s none of my business.†He shrugged and returned his gaze to hers. “It is a common enough tale on Valhalla. My family contained several females.†She stared at him. “Is that supposed to make sense to me?†“On my planet, women are rare and highly prized. Other villages and tribes regularly raid their neighbors to secure females for themselves.†“That’s terrible.†He shrugged. “That’s life. The desire to procreate, to have a child is deeply embedded in most societies, yes?†“I suppose it is, although most of the planets in our galaxy are trying to keep their populations down these days to preserve quality of life.†His expression was wry. “I believe the queen would call that ironic. We worship fertile women and other civilizations try and stop their females from breeding. My queen tells me that women on your planet are not always well treated by their men.†Thea paused as the server put the garlic bread on the table between them. “Statistically, there are more women than men on this planet. Most of the men seem to think that gives them the right to mess around with a woman and then move onto the next one.†Sven picked up a piece of garlic bread and swallowed it whole. “You sound bitter, Ms. Cooper.†She nibbled at the corner of her bread. “Please call me Thea, we’re not at work now.†He took more bread. “But you said this was a business meeting.†She glared at him. “I know I did but that doesn’t mean you can’t call me by my first name. As long as you don’t do it at work, I’m fine with it.†He nodded and his lips gleamed with garlic butter. She wanted to lean across the small space and lick them clean. “Then you must call me Sven.â€

Yay! Finally the new cover for ‘Secured Mail’ my follow-up book to ‘Planet Mail’ from Ellora’s Cave (yes, I do get around a bit) a scintillating tale of intergalactic viking love. I don’t have a date for publication yet and it will be out as an e-book first, but hopefully it will be this summer
Here’s a quick blurb:
Sven Magnusson’s stuck on Planet Earth sexually serving his queen, Douglass and dealing with a culture where women don’t seem to want a man’s protection. As he struggles to understand Earth females, the queen encourages him to get laid. Of course, Thea Cooper, the only woman who appeals to him, thinks men are useful for one thing and on a one night only basis. Despite their clash of sexual cultures and the fury of their heated erotic encounters, can Sven find a way to convince Thea that her future belongs with him on Planet Valhalla?
Updated to add-the release date is July 30th-so not so long to wait!
And something else fun-if you are a writer-I got a mention in Publisher’s Weekly! Here’s the link

We went to my daughter’s ‘Open House’ at school last week and came home with a wonderful collection of her writing, drawing and school work. We also got to see the above-which was on display in the classroom. Not sure if you can read them so I’ll re-do them here:
DAD “My dad works sometimes at home. Sometimes he goes to the gym. He comes to play games with me when he is done with his work. he swings me around and around and I get dizzy. I jump on him.”
All true. He’s a great dad.
MOM “My Mom has black hair. She likes to play games with me (I’m really bad at playing games with her.)Sometimes she works and writes books. (Cool! one of my kids finally realizes that I have a job!) Sometimes my mom has enough time to talk to me.”
Well, of course, the last line made me feel like the worst mother in the world. You can all picture me callously ignoring my child in the pursuit of fame and glory now, can’t you? -Mr Kate thought it was funny because he got such a glowing report card-although I did point out that he sounded like a six year old, but he was fine with that.
So, yeah, job satisfaction good, mothering skills, zero. Is there really a balance out there? off to eat some comfort food now…
p.s. I sent “Riding the Line” in to my editor today! I hope he likes it! I’ll tell you all about it next time!

Anyone who knows me finds out that my family have this drinking problem. We are terminally incapable of holding onto anything containing liquid. I’m sure you remember my previous post about the pint of strawberry milkshake I threw all over myself in college? That wasn’t the only beverage I’ve knocked, dropped, splashed, smashed or poured over myself-and others.
I’m also an expert at finding that cup of coffee you’ve placed beside your chair leg to finish later. I can guarantee I’ll find it and knock it over for you. Some of the problem is genetic. My family have long gangly arms and a tendency to wave said arms around when they talk, and we also trip over stuff that isn’t there. One of my sisters who shall remain nameless, took a spectacular dive from the top of the stairs at the National Theatre beside the Thames-with an open box of egg sandwiches in her hand-not a pretty sight.
I wasn’t too bad at the Romantic Times conference, but I did manage to knock my entire glass of iced water into my lap at one of the lunches which made me jump up in the air and screech like I had the winning bingo ticket because it was COLD, startling the other diners at my table. Luckily I had black pants on so no one could see the damage.
But the worst thing happened on the plane home… I had the window seat and a rather attractive young man came and sat on the aisle. He was chatting in ITALIAN on his cell phone and casually taking off a rather nice leather jacket as he spoke. I gave him my best smile and he smiled right back. So far so good. No one appeared to take the middle spot so I focused on dozing (it was a tiring week) The drinks came and the guy let down the center seat tray and we both put our drinks on it.
I had hot tea and he had a can of apple juice and a cup filled with ice. We also got a couple of bags of pretzels each (whoopee!) As I sipped my tea, the guy went to sleep. I’d almost finished my tea and went to put it down when the plane kind of got into some turbulence and I knocked my tea over…
So picture me frantically trying to stem the tide of tea covering the whole of the little tray with 2 napkins made from air. I’m scooping tea over the side back into the cup with my hand and trying to stop it dripping all over Italian guy as he sleeps. The pretzels are covered in tea, the napkins are useless, I can’t find the call light in the darkness and I’m unwilling to wake IG up by making a fuss. I start to look through my carry on bag for any more tissues and can’t find them. By this point, stuff is starting to mass ominously on the edge of his side of the tray and I’m desperate.
Inspiration strikes. I don’t know about you, but I always carry a pair of clean panties in my carry on just in case. Let me just say that they came in very handy mopping up and that IG didn’t even wake up while I stemmed the tide.
Of course he did wake up eventually and shot me a disgusted look as he picked up his still damp packet of pretzels…but I smiled sweetly and apologized and he let it go. Thank god he didn’t see the green panties or he might have thought I was some kind of nutcase…
Mr Kate was horrified when I told him this story, but I insisted I was simply resourceful. It took me right back to the day I threw up after swimming practice on the bus home and got a team point for using my initiative and throwing up in my plastic swimming hat.
As I said, me and liquids, don’t mix.
Please send good thoughts for my missing cat, Jasper. He’s ten years old, 20 llbs of ginger fur and of a very crabby disposition.

This is a very rare photo of me and Mr Kate-together. I have permission from the great man to post it, mainly I suspect because it contains plenty of his other loves-cars. The car directly behind us, with the stripe, is his pride and joy a 360 Stradele. What’s not to like? And as you can see we are surrounded by Ferrari’s
This Sunday, we got to go on a mini-Ferrari rally. It wasn’t supposed to be competitive but with over a hundred Ferrari’s and some very A type personalities, I suspect there was some major jostling for position along the way. I told Mr Kate very firmly that if he raced I would throw up and that was the end of it.
We were sent on a 65 mile loop of back roads that eventually took us back to the Infineon race track where the Ferrari Challenge race series was being held over the weekend. During the journey we got a little lost when we got lazy and simply followed the person in front of us-we took a block long detour and came back out where we’d started. We also managed to miss the exit off the freeway seeing as there was a bit of too-ing and fro-ing with some other Ferrari’s and everyone missed the exit
It was fun and people along the way seemed to enjoy seeing that many Ferrari’s at once-not a sight you often see on a Sunday morning! A couple of drivers who got caught up in the middle of great big bunches of Ferrari’s usually gave in and pulled over to let everyone go past-too much pressure I suspect. Although there were some Prius drivers who seemed to be quite happy to sit amongst the evil fuel guzzlers and make us all feel bad.
When we got to the race track, they let us all out in a very organized manner to do a lap around the track! This was exciting for me as I’ve never done that before. Mr K is rather blase about it having done a couple of racing courses there. Of course we only got to do about 30 MPH which was a little disappointing but it was still cool!

I’m back and the conference was…an experience. It was at times chaotic, awesome, hilarious and downright amusing. But the opportunity to meet fans, reviewers, booksellers and other writers was too great to miss. Meeting someone who has flown all the way from Australia to buy romance novels, including yours, and watching as someone retrieves a copy of your book for you to sign from their bag is a special experience.
This is Mari and me at the Fairie Ball, glamming it up, Mari is the sparkly one!
It actually made me realize that I don’t write in a vacuum and that there really are people out there who read and enjoy my books! It was also an opportunity to re-connect with some of my favorite writerly folk and meet some new ones. Writers are a strange breed. We emerge blinking into the frenzy of a conference of over a thousand chattering people. Some of us step back and observe, and others let rip!
Of course, at my age, I’m an observer. I’m proud to say that there’s no risk of any risque photos of me emerging from RT at all-unless someone photoshop’s me of course And yes, there were cover models, lovely guys for the most part although I didn’t get into any conversations with them, just admired from afar. With a nineteen year old son of my own, somehow most of them just didn’t do it for me
Tawny and Erica take top honors in the costume contest!
I was amazed at the effort some folk put into their costumes for the Fairie ball, Ellora’s Cave Golden Era of Hollywood night and the Vampire Ball. I just put on any old thing and turned up and boy, was I underdressed!
The book signing was also fun. I was amazed at the constant stream of readers and book buyers. I sold several books and got to chat to some fans-yeah-I had some-it was so cool!! Luckily for me I always get to sit next to the amazing Kayla Perrin at the signings-it’s alphabetical-and we always share a few laughs. This came in handy when just before the book signing ended, the whole ballroom was plunged into darkness. We decided that Fabio must have arrived at the hotel and sucked all the energy and female hormones out of the air.
Here we have Sharon Page another great Aphrodisia author and the lovely Kayla Perrin
Big thanks to Lilian Feisty for the photos – I didn’t even try and take any this year mine are usually so bad… More soon!

Now I ‘know’ it’s not shouting Regency, but it is still beautiful, especially the guy:)
Simply Sinful comes out at the beginning of November this year. Here’s the blurb:
A Wicked Proposition…
Forced to wed at a young age, Abigail Beecham is tired of living in a sexless marriage. She longs to succumb to the delicious pleasures of pure carnal lust that she has only read about. And if her husband James can’t satisfy her erotic needs, he’s ready to find a man who can.
A Wild Past
Peter Howard is accustomed to unusual sexual requests. His seven years as a slave in a Turkish brothel left his skilled in sensual delights. But there is little that actually arouses him-until he meets James and Abigail. Maybe now he’ll finally experience that exquisite feeling of bliss he so desperately desires.
It was so much fun to write this book, mainly because I knew the characters so well. But it didn’t turn out quite how I anticipated-you’ll have to read it to find out why The best thing is, I get the opportunity to write two more in this series. So look out next year for “Simply Shameless” which is about Madame Helene, and another, as yet untitled, about Anthony Sokorvsky.
I’m off to the RT convention tonight, so if you’re coming, please pop by the book signing and say hi!

I’m busy trying to get organized enough to go to the RT conference in Pittsburgh on Wednesday the 16th. Of course I also have to organize the family as well so that dear Mr Kate can get everything done. Today I bought 2 tubs of ice cream, 2 boxes of breaded shrimp and a dozen ice cream sandwiches so he’s all freezered up on bribes.
Unfortunately the only direct flight I could get to Pittsburgh was overnight-so that will be fun! I get there at 6:30 a.m. I suspect my hotel room will not be ready for at least another 6 hours-hell…
I’ll be sure and report back how it went!
