When we were overseas a few years ago we had a bit of an adjustment when it came to the differences in foods, but it was great fun and quite a learning experience.

Aside from the biscuits/cookies difference, we discovered such British curiosities as Spotted Dick, which, apparently, it’s some sort of pudding, and Lardy Cake. Then there was Toad-in-the-Hole, and Bangers and Mash, and Bubble and Squeak…and on and on.

My paternal grandmother was from Ireland (half Irish and half English) and so I was familiar with some of those foods, but my husband felt clueless. I must tell you that he drew the line at ordering the spotted dick. LOL

Kake... now just how did you get that name again?

LOL, maybe it's the foreign born gene, but I can't bake either. Of course, it probably comes more from being raised by a woman who didn't bake than having been born in Cuba.

Kate,

It even happens to those of us longer in the States than you.

My mom, Canadian by birth, can't make pancakes that don't appear cakelike (freaking tall things) and her cakes, well, flat as a pancake. ;) But that woman can bake a pie that will bring tears to the eye. Even better than my grandmum who's been baking for 70+ years.

Me? Cook? I'd rather do laundry. Picky family has chased the joy of trying new things right out of me. Now I let my Boy cook. He's still adventurous even if most of us are running in fear.

Is your oven temp off? Recently I found out mine is running much hotter. Brick brownies anyone? Oh, it popped the wire from your braces. On a brownie? ;)

Good luck with your historical, Kate. I'll be cheering you on while I try to do the para team.

Thanks for the words the other night. They helped as much as your cheery voice.

K.
